Former crossing guard Rupert ‘Chum’ Parker before his retirement in December 2011.

RCMP issued two tickets this week for drivers failing to stop for the crossing guards at Digby Elementary School.

Both incidents took place on Monday, Dec. 2 – one on Victoria Street and one on Shreve Street (the crosswalk to the rink parking lot).

Corporal Tim MacDonald said the crossing guard on Victoria Street had to yank a small child out of the way of a vehicle that ended up stopping half over the crosswalk.

MacDonald said there was no indication that either driver was using a cellphone – it seems they just didn’t notice the crosswalks and the children.

“People aren’t paying attention,” said MacDonald. “Everyone is in a hurry to go somewhere and there mind is on something else.”

The maximum fine for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is $690.

MacDonald advises motorists to slow down and stay alert – especially this time of year when we know kids are excited and distracted, the days are shorter and darker and the roads slipperier.

“This is not the time of year when we need any bad things happening,” said MacDonald.

I would request as a concerned citizen that both driver's phone records be reviewed...it is easy to put the phone down to hide it. If your phone rings or if you want to make a phone call...Pull Over....how can you miss the guard who is wearing the orange suit? And everyone Knows that both those areas have children present.

I believe that was my granddaughter she six years old... there no excuse for this person not being fully aware of what's going on around them especially in a school zone...they have no need to be on cells phone or trying to get some were n a hurry...what's is so important that they can't SLOW DOWN...YES THIS GRANDPARENT IS FURIOUS CAUSE I COULD OF LOST MY GRANDCHILD N HER FAMILY WOULD BE BURIED HER....I BELIEVED THE RCMP SHOULD BE AROUND THE TIME SCHOOLS R OUT JUST TO MAKE SURE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN AGAIN... THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENED... CROSSING GUARDS DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO WRITE DOWN OR CATCH A LICENSE PLATE NUMBER... THEY NEED SOME KIND OF CAMERA SO THEY CAN CATCH THE LICENSE PLATE.... LETS KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE

Can the quick acting crossing guard get a shout out? The reader should really know their name, so they can get the praise they deserve.
