Well, the weather forecasters got it right.
The projectednor’easter brought 30 to 40 cm of snow over the weekend, and high winds that left thousands of Nova Scotians temporarily without power.
Blizzard warnings forced the cancellation of many Hants County events scheduled for the weekend.
On Feb. 9, a day hockey fans from across the country were expected to be passing the puck with former NHL stars at the Cradle of Hockey for the 2nd annual Long Pond Heritage Classic, many awoke to learn they’d be contending with blowing snow, and deep drifts if they dared to step outdoors.
Organizers of the Long Pond Heritage Classic, the Windsor Hockey Heritage Society’s main fundraiser, issued a press release announcing the cancellation of the much anticipated six-team tournament, and subsequent banquet, Feb. 7.
“The safety of our players, celebrities, vendors, volunteers and spectators is our top priority,” event chairperson Rob Frost said in the prepared statement.
The release says the former NHL players flying in for the Classic would have faced travel delays or flight cancellations, and the organizing committee did not want anyone on the roads in the snowstorm. The committee has yet to disclose if the event will be rescheduled, or called off for the year.
Ski Martock also closed Saturday, cancelling several events, due to heavy snowfall and inclement weather warnings, but the groomed slopes were ready for the public by Sunday morning.
The Windsor Winter Carnival free public skate and family fun activities planned for Saturday were also cancelled.
The winter carnival events scheduled for Friday — seniors’ card tournaments and a luncheon, the pre-teen dance and fireworks — were not called off in anticipation of the storm.
