A number of children and neighbours gathered around the former Kings County Academy Saturday afternoon as Kentville firefighters put out a dumpster fire in the old school’s courtyard.

Kentville Police and a Kings RCMP dog team were also on the scene shortly after 5 p.m.

Deputy Chief Ryan MacEachern said kids had been seen near the dumpster and had allegedly started the fire.

Kentville Police officer Ken Read said the RCMP dog didn’t locate anyone, but an investigation continues.

The buildings on the property are currently empty. The School Street property was declared surplus by the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board after Aldershot students finished their year there in June.

Kentville is expected to take on the property within a few weeks.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story stated the town currently owns the school. Kentville was expected to take possession of the property before Aug. 31 but the process is not yet complete.

Organizations: Kings County Academy, RCMP, Annapolis Valley Regional School Board
