The Municipality of Barrington is exploring the possibility of transferring surplus municipal property in Woods Harbour to the Shag Harbour UFO Incident Society to be used as a permanent home for the UFO Museum.

Municipal Council discussed the possibility earlier this month at the committee level.

The municipality acquired the surplus property, located at # 6315 Highway 3, as well as three other properties, by default during a tax sale in March, 2009.

While the municipality has previously tried to sell all four pieces, there were no takers.

The Shag Harbour Incident Society meanwhile, is trying to find a permanent home for its museum, but have been unable to secure funding to purchase a building.

“We don’t want to close the museum and we don’t want to lose all we’ve built up over the past five years,” Cindy Nickerson, president of the Incident Society, told municipal councillors.

Under the Municipal Government Act  as well as municipal policy, the sale of municipal property for less than fair market value is allowable, provided a public hearing is held and the transaction is approved by a 2/3 majority council vote.

Council has directed staff to further research the issue and report back before a decision is made on what to do with the Woods Harbour property.

As for the other three pieces of surplus property, which includes vacant lots in Woods Harbour and Lower Clark’s Harbour, as well as a house and property on the Stoney Island Road, the municipality will be advertizing those properties for sale.

I can't think of a higher or better use for the property. Remember, this is Canada's Roswell. Attention to the subject of UFO's is bound to increase significantly within the next couple of years. Might boost Tourism in the area.
