The Highway 103 was closed between exit 26 and 27 for approximately 4 hours after a dump truck went off the road and into the trees. A fuel leak was being cleaned up to avoid contamination into one of the nearby streams.
At around 8:00 a.m. Thursday morning the driver of the dump truck was headed East toward Port Mouton, delivering a culvert to his employers when his right front tire blew causing his to veer off of the road, smashing into and over a guardrail and landing into the trees around a hundred feet away.
“There was nothing to do but hang on,” said driver Harold Jackson, who was able to walk away from the wreck with minor injuries. “I had to close my eyes because I didn’t want to see where I was going.”
Shelburne firefighters responded to the scene and immediately set into action to contain the leak of 500 litres of diesel fuel that was beginning to spread.
“We’re worried about the fuel leaking into the stream,” said Sgt. Barry MacLellan at the scene.
But the area was successfully cleaned up and the road was reopened after being okayed by the Department of Environment and Department of Transportation.
