The head of Liverpool Regional High School’s math department has been charged with sexual exploitation.
Derrick Joseph Redden, 41, was charged by Queens RCMP on Friday, March 5.
According to court records filed in Bridgewater, the teacher will appear in Liverpool Provincial Court on May 4 to answer to the charge.
During the investigation, police conducted searches at the home of the accused and another at the home of the victim in the case.
In those searches RCMP say a computer and two cell phones were seized.
Contacted by The Advance, a spokesperson for the South Shore Regional School Board would only confirm that a teacher within the district had been charged by RCMP and had been placed on paid leave.
Trish Smith, of the school board, said the school involved would receive additional support, including any needed counseling, in the wake of the allegations.
According to Canada’s Criminal Code, the charge of sexual exploitation is an offence that involves someone who is a position of trust with a victim who is older than 14 but younger than 18 years old.
