Emera, the parent company of Nova Scotia Power, has purchased Scotian Windfield’s 50 per cent share of the Digby wind farm project, giving it full ownership.

Emera had previously bought the 50 per cent stake owned by SkyPower Corp., which was later renamed Interwind Corp. It filed for creditor protection last August.

The Digby wind project will see a 30-megawatt farm with 20 wind turbines placed in the Gulliver’s Cove area.

Emera corporate communications director Sasha Irving said the company entered into the court process last fall when Interwind went into creditor protection. “We feel it’s a good project and like to see it move forward in Nova Scotia. From a company perspective, we had more flexibility to enter the process when required to purchase those assets.”

After the purchasing Interwind’s share last fall, the company moved through discussions with Scotian WindFields and ended up purchasing their share as well, said Irving. The purchase was finalized Feb. 1.

Emera now has a development agreement with Scotian WindFields, Irving said. The wind project is still aiming for a completion date this year of Dec. 31.

Engineering and design work is taking place now.

It is estimated the wind farm will produce enough energy for 10,000 homes once operational.
