O’LEARY – The Prince County Fishermen’s Association’s lobster rationalization committee were waiting until Jan. 25 to open applications from fishers interested in taking them up on their retirement offer.

The committee has 24 fishers signed up for the retirement package since last year and recently put out notices seeking 10 more. Friday was the deadline for applying, but Shelton Barlow said the committee would wait until Monday to open the applications, in case some are still in the mail. The committee had received about six applications by Friday, he said.

Also on Monday, the committee will put the finishing touches to the lobster management plan before submitting it to the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Submitting a management plan acceptable to DFO is a prerequisite for receiving federal funding to assist in the purchase and retirement of the lobster licences.
