Event takes place July 15 - 25

By Carla Allen THE VANGUARD NovaNewsNow.com This is the second year for the merging of the Parade of Lights, Lobster festival and Seafest festival into a longer celebration packed full of activities. The union was a good one says vice president Linda Deveau.

“Last year we implemented that format and absolutely loved it and are continuing in that same vein,” she said.

Last year, new additions included the sold-out seafood cannery tours, lobster pound tours, children’s parade and dragon boat races that were very well received. “We think we have a few new things this year that are going to be a big hit,” added president Don Smith.

The Grand Banks Mackerel Toss will be held on July 21 and will involve staff wearing unusual footwear from several local banks participating in a relay race/skill toss using fish. “Agility will be required,” laughed Deveau.

A Digital Scavenger Hunt organized by the YMCA encourages teamwork and lots of unusual photography.

Three bands are being booked for the Seafest Parade on July 18 and this is the first year for no parking along the entire route. Close to a dozen areas will be designated for veteran and disabled persons.

The Yarmouth Garden Club will be conducting a tour of gardens in the county on July 19 for the first time. A vehicle is required.

Musical entertainment includes many bands and singers on the waterfront along with an open mike night.

This year’s Art and Architecture walking tour will be conducted by Ken Langille.

The Yarmouth County Museum & Archives is joining in the fun with their annual garden sale on July 18, and several presentations. July 22 is designated as Museum Day with all museums in the county participating.

Lighthouse Day on July 24 features an acadian style breakfast at the Mug Up tea room, picnic by the sea and bonfire in the evening.

Old favorites like the Concert of Bells, fireworks, classic car cruise, fish feast, Seafest pageant, Cook’s chowder cook-off, lobster eating contest and much more, will be taking place.

Deveau says the festival is the largest one in Southwest Nova. “It’s a Nova Scotia signature event and it’s recognized by Nova Scotia Tourism,” said Deveau. “The economic impact is huge.”

Volunteers are still welcome to assist with different events and can offer their services through the Seafest office at the Yarmouth Mall.
