Littering continues to be a problem on the otherwise pristine beaches of Cape Sable Island and the Municipality of Barrington is proposing to pump up the fines in an effort to address the situation.

Fines are $100 for first offense, $500 for second offense and $3,000 for each subsequent offense for the by-law no.8 infraction, which deals with the collection, storage and disposal of waste.

At the June 1 committee of the whole meeting, councillor Shaun Hatfield suggested fines be raised to $1,000 for first offense, $2,000 for second offense and $5,000 for third offense. The motion to recommend to council was carried unanimously. “Certainly if we send the message that a first time offense could carry a fine of a couple of thousand dollars then it would give people pause to think,” said Hatfield.
