Manager Denise Nickerson says the event has become very popular.
“Last year a couple hundred people gathered at the Cape Forchu Light to support and bless the lobster fleet as it departed for the first day of the lobster fishing season,” she said.
At 5:45 a.m., local retired fisherman Roger Nickerson blessed the lobster fleet live on radio CJLS and on a hand held VHS for all to hear.
At 6 a.m., town crier David Olie proclaimed the opening of the season. Residents are encouraged to continue to show their support for lobster fisherman by attending this emotional tribute as vessels depart in the darkness.
Fishermen have commented in the past how they feel at seeing the beams of hundreds of flashlights shining from the Cape in support of their industry.
A continental breakfast will be available at 5 a.m. for a donation to the Friends of the Yarmouth Light Society. The blessing of the fleet will take place at 5:45 a.m.
Departure of the fleet is 6 a.m. All who attend are asked to bring flashlights.
