By Leanne Delong THE ADVANCE NovaNewsNow.com After a tragic accident between a vehicle and two motorcycles in Blockhouse took the lives of five people, Jim McQuarrie of Greenfield decided to install an illegal safety feature on his motorcycle.

Topics :
RCMP , Greenfield General Store , New Germany , Yarmouth

McQuarrie and his wife, Marion, who have been driving motorcycles since the 1980s, have placed an LED light under the headlights on the front of their motorcycles.

The LED light is a slow flashing amber light used on a number of slow vehicles, such as mail carriers or tow trucks, explained McQuarrie.

They are trying to get provincial legislation changed to have the word “motorcycles” included in the Motor Vehicle Act under the safety lights section.

McQuarrie has spoken with a number of RCMP officers as well as Queens County MLA Vicki Conrad about the proposed change.

He said they all thought it was an excellent idea.

In the meantime, however, the McQuarries are driving illegally and could receive a $160 fine if stopped by the police.

But, as McQuarrie believes, “You can’t put a dollar figure on safety.”

They are circulating petitions in the surrounding areas and have already gathered between 250 and 300 names in favour of the change to the Motor Vehicle Act, he said.

Petitions are located at Greenfield General Store, Silver Sprocket on King St., New Germany, Fabrizone, Cardinal Fire and Safety, and one is in Yarmouth. “If we can go out and save one life with this light,” said McQuarrie, “then the whole thing is worth it.”

Marion McQuarrie added, “The life you save may be your own.”

Not only does she believe the LED light is worth every penny, but she feels much safer driving her motorcycle with it on.
