The charming town of Annapolis Royal was chosen earlier this month as the winner of the International Challenge at the Communities in Bloom Awards in the small category.

Topics :
Annapolis Royal , Night of The Living Forest , Mariners Centre , Historic Gardens , Canada , Ireland

The Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens, along with the beautifully maintained grounds of many homes and businesses, anchored the success in several of the evaluation categories.

The little community competed against five others from Canada, Ireland, England, and the United States to win the award. CIB volunteer judges evaluated each town on its overall performance in the following areas: tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaped areas, floral displays, and turf and groundcovers. The evaluation is based on the local conditions and achievements of citizens, businesses, organizations, institutions, and the municipal government working together.

The town’s commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability was noted, as was the vibrant arts and culture presence. A strong community involvement was also evident to the judges.

If you’re the type that appreciates the delicious thrill derived from being scared on a spooky trail, a visit to the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens might be in order for Thursday, Oct. 30.

It’s the Night of The Living Forest with guided hikes being provided through the dark and mysterious woodlands of these botanical gardens. Visitors are encouraged to use all of their senses to explore the “living forest”, watch for magical creatures and listen to the stories told by the keepers of the woods.

Participants can learn about the “scary things” that happen to our forests and how we can help protect them.

The hikes start every 30 minutes on the hour from 7 until 8:30 p.m. The rain date is Saturday, Nov. 1.

Costumes are encouraged and those dressed as animals, plants and insects will receive free admission, otherwise a minimum donation of $2 is suggested.

Bring a flashlight; wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes. Before or after the hike join organizers for music and face painting in front of a roaring fire in the Garden Room. For more info: visit http://botanicalgardens.acadiau.ca or call 902-585-5242.

Although there are many details that remain to be finalized, it’s looking good for Blooms by the Sea – A Nova Scotia Gardening and Landscaping Show that will take place in May 2009 at the Yarmouth Mariners Centre.

The event will have several components including a trade show, gardening and landscaping displays, workshops and lectures, entertainment and other attractions.

The website: www.bloomsbythesea.com will be featuring continual updates as show plans develop and visitors are being urged to check back on a regular basis.
