Very shortly our community will become a centre for motorcycle enthusiasts from all over. Last year we had guests from as far away as Scotland and the far reaches of North America.

It has been a challenging year for the tourism sector but we had a very successful Scallop Days with a Loyalist theme and it is hoped that the Rally will surpass even the organizers expectations.

Last year I was fortunate to be one of the volunteers who worked the registration Desk. I was amazed by the number of people who came just to see the ‘bikes’.

There were also recently retired folks who saw their motorcycles as a fuel-efficient way to see the country.

The Digby waterfront was alive. It was a family event where young and old enjoyed the carnival atmosphere.

I also got the feeling since this was the last big splash of summer, that many participants were taking this opportunity to relax one last time before the pressures of school, work and the long winter overwhelmed us all.

The immediate economic spin offs are obvious as our hospitality businesses will attest, but there are other long term effects that some us are just beginning to note.

Wharf Rat visitors have returned again and again, not just for the Rally, but to enjoy extended vacations in our area. I met quite a few at Scallop Days who were here as a result of their Wharf Rat Experience in previous years. This event is an opportunity to extend our tourism season into the fall.

As this has become a significant event for our community, the Digby Area Board of Trade is sponsoring a Decorating Contest. Digby area businesses and organizations are invited to participate in the fun of the Wharf Rat Rally by decorating their businesses in the week leading up to the Rally. This Contest is designed to demonstrate community spirit through creative endeavour, encourage a team effort, and foster healthy competition. Decorating can be a window display, interior decor or both. The point is to have fun and let visitors and residents alike know that the Rally has arrived.

Judging will take place during the weekend with winners to be announced at the Closing Ceremonies on Sunday The categories are: Best Business Display (Town & County), Best Window Display, Best Outdoor Display, Best Restaurant Display and The Wharf Rat Spirit Display. The Board is hoping that this contest will also become an annual event. Kristy@ns.sympatico.ca
