FIREFIGHTERS NEED PROPER TRAINING

Fire chiefs in Nova Scotia who represent 289 departments and approximately 7500 firefighters are asking the province's Labour Department to establish fire training sites in Yarmouth, Halifax, Cape Breton, Cumberland County and northeast Nova Scotia. The chiefs would also like to see the replacement of the Waverley Training School built in 1967. This new center would be known as the Nova Scotia Emergency Training Academy. They also recommend creating a set of professional firefighting standards and mandatory training regulations. Career and volunteer firefighters in Nova Scotia cannot and should not rely on on-the-job live fire training to acquire basic firefighting and fire command skills.

DATE IN HISTORY

March 21, 1977 - A trailer located at the rear of a home on Prospect Street was damaged by fire during a 1:31 alarm. Several horses were blindfolded and led to safety by firefighters. The department was on scene for two hours.

OPEN HOUSE EARLY NOTICE

On Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be an open house at the Yarmouth fire hall. The rain date will be June 14. There is to be games, rides on the 1/3rd, treasure chest, yard sale, craft sale, face painting and something for the whole family.

PRODUCT RECALL

A.O. Smith Electrical Products Co. of Tipp City, Ohio, is recalling the "Whole-House" exhaust fan electric motors as the fan's electric motor can be miswired and overheat, posing a fire hazard. These fans are typically mounted on the floor of an attic. Serial numbers are S56A30A54 and S56A3097 and sell for about $3,000. If the units have a sticker indicating the unit has been rewired they are not subject to this recall.
