April is now history, and we here at Grand View Manor in Berwick are looking forward to a great spring.

Susan Ueffing was here for an afternoon of music.

We had an afternoon of Holland memories. Sieny Devries and Maria Jacobs brought in items from Holland and Trudie Nettie, now a resident, added her memories from Holland.

Brenda Berule provided music one morning.

Students from Somerset school started their adopt-a-grandparent program. The residents and youth are both enjoying their time together.

We have planted seeds inside.

We had a great afternoon with our very own “dancing with the stars,” Gary Davis and Elaine Boyd, who demonstrated dances from years gone by. Our own Grand View Manor dancing star, administrator Graham Hardy, had his moment of glory.

We enjoyed a visit from the church youth in Centreville and Moncton. They came to visit and provided a sing song.

We had our Volunteer Appreciation evening April 29. Kitchen staff Judy Rockwell, Tina Chapman and Linda Davidson did a fantastic job of preparing a buffet for all our valued volunteers. It was wonderful to see so many out. Heather McMahon was GVM’s Volunteer of the Year. Britney Cornect was the recipient of the GVM George Barkhouse Memorial Bursary. Britney is a junior volunteer at GVM, entering Memorial University in NFLD to begin her nursing career in the fall. Grand View Manor could not do its many programs without the help of volunteers. If anyone would like to volunteer, especially with summer coming, to take residents outside for walks or to just sit in the garden, please contact Lynn Hardy.

Our annual ticket auction is May 10 the GVM Golf Tournament is June 6. If anyone is interested in putting in a team, please contact Lisa Baltzer at GVM.

Thank you for giving your stuffed teddy bears. We really appreciate them. Anyone having smaller size bears theywould like to donate, they can be left at the manor.

We had a retirement party for Laurie Ward, who has worked at GVM for 35 years. Best wishes and gifts were presented to Laurie from the residents and staff. We wish her well and hope she enjoys her retirement.

George Moody, chairman of the Grand View Manor Seniors Foundation, is pleased to announce the second Howard L. Beals and Bertram N. Greene Memorial Bursary. Howard Beals and Bertram Greene are former chairmen of the board, Beals from 1968 – 1991 and Greene from 1991 until 2007. Both men passed away a week apart in March, 2007. Both gentlemen were Kings County councillors for many years and had been appointed to the board. The $1,000 bursary is awarded to a dependent of a Grand View Manor employee entering or already enrolled in a recognized post secondary institution. Bursary applications are available at Grand View Manor’s front desk, with the closing date June 16at 4 p.m. Donations are also being accepted to create the Howard L. Beals and Bertram N. Greene memorial trust fund, to support the bursary in future years.
