Is it summer yet? The weather has not been great this month for getting outside here at Grand View Manor in Berwick. We have a new summer helper for the gardens, so they are taking shape now. George and Jeremiah have been planting and cleaning up the gardens.

Susan Ueffing came and played on the units. Grant Tupper and friends were here for an afternoon of music. We had a Father’s Day program for our men. They enjoyed music by Country Breeze.

We had a really nice wedding afternoon. The assembly room was decorated for a wedding fashion show. We had models showing off wedding dresses. We had readings and music for the occassion. Wedding cake was served at the end.

We had a school’s out afternoon with trivia and a spelling bee. We also had a zany fashion show. The residents enjoyed staff dressing up in some really crazy outfits.

We had a Canada Day celebration with the Assembly Room set up in Canada Day flags and colors. We played Canadian songs and we finished with ice cream.

The Golden Oldies Garden Club have been back to do work on the front garden: Bill and Betty Woodworth, John and Jessie MacKenzie, Joan Harris, Gloria Doherty and Lois Day. They have added new flowers and garden figures. We thank these folks for helping the manor improve its outside areas for the residents.

The GVM Seniors Foundation Golf Tournament was a great success. There were 24 teams of four at Berwick Heights Golf Course, with over $15,000 raised.

Chaplain Liz johnson has commented getting special music for her Sunday afternoon church services is becoming very difficult. If anyone could provide special music, you might want to give Liz Johnson or Lynn Hardy a call at the manor.

We welcome 10 Continuing Care Assistant students to GVM. These students under the instruction of Annette Howland are training for work with a hands-on approach. They will learn techiques and put them to practice immediately.

When GVM took over the junior volunteer program from the Western Kings Memorial Hospital, we set up the George Barkhouse Memorial Bursary in memory of a very generous volunteer. The bursary is presented to a junior volunteer who shows dedication and committment, and is usually given to a youth who is persuing a career in nursing. This year, GVM was pleased and proud to present Leslie Fraser with this bursary. Leslie is going on to nursing school in the fall. We wish her all the best and will miss her as a junior volunteer.
