Since the majority of them weren’t familiar with the show, Yvette d’Entremont’s drama students at Ecole Par-en-Bas in Tusket, Yarmouth County had to first ‘get acquainted’ so they could do a spoof of the spy parody television show ‘Get Smart.’
“I found four episodes and I showed them to them,” says d’Entremont. “They thought it was hilarious.”
Now the bowties and spy accessories have all come together for a production the 14 students and their teacher will be staging Jan. 20-22 called “La Menace” (which means The Threat).
“It’s total comedy,” says d’Entremont, which also means it is a total departure from the last production the school staged a year ago.
D’Entremont opted to go the comedy route, based on the dynamics of the Grade 10 group she was working with.
The show includes the regular suspects of the television series, although some of the names and numbers have been mixed around. For interest Agent 86 is Agent 68 and Agent 99 is Agent 66. The other main difference is the dialogue is in French.
As for the premise of the play, the agents, working for Control, have to prevent their enemy KAOS from detonating a nuclear bomb capable of destroying the entire North American continent.
Talk about a rough day at work.
The production also counts towards the grade the students will receive for their semester in the drama program at the school.
Showtime is 7 p.m. each night, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door.
