Annapolis Valley Giant Vegetable Growers will host their 6th annual weigh off Sept. 26 and 27 in Waterville.
The Annapolis Valley Giant Vegetable Growers have caught the eye of a major cable television network.
Paul Ferguson, president of the AVGVG, confirmed the unnamed network will be in the Valley in September to film the group’s sixth annual weigh off, taking place Sept. 26 and 27 at Glad Gardens nursery and farm market in Waterville.
“We aren’t at liberty to divulge the network involved, but that information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks,” said Ferguson, adding the opportunity is an exciting one “to showcase our hobby and the Annapolis Valley.”
Ferguson said the network has already had some initial contact with local growers.
“They are interested in the people stories behind the giant vegetable growing.”
The club is no stranger to international media attention after the world’s longest gourd, at close to 140 inches, was grown locally and unveiled at the 2013 competition.
“After that we were featured on the Live with Kelly and Michael show,” said Ferguson.
Interest in the club, which remains unique because its annual competition features between 14-16 variety of vegetables as well as giant gourds and pumpkins, has grown steadily since its first weigh-off six years ago.
“Back then we had eight entries. This year we expect to have between 80 and 100 entries.”
Because many growers lost three of the best weeks of the growing season after post tropical storm Arthur roared through the region, Ferguson expects the event “might not see the poundage” that has been consistent in the past few years.
“But we still have four weeks to go in the growing season, so you never know what (kind of entries) we will get. And that is part of what makes it interesting year after year.”
The 2014 weigh-off, which features a children’s category, begins Friday evening, Sept. 26, with the smaller vegetable competition. The pumpkins and squash are weighed on Saturday. Admission to the event is free and entries are welcomed from the membership and the general public. For information visit the growers' website .
