Young 4-H members from throughout the county gathered at various achievement days this summer to show off their hard work.

The youths, typically between the ages of eight and 18, showcased their lifeskills projects as well as livestock at well-attended events.

The Avon 4-H Club was among the groups hosting an achievement day.

Catherine Manning, a 4-H foods leader with the Avon club and member of the Windsor-based achievement day organizing committee, commended the youths on their hard work over the past year.

“They work on their projects all year long and in order to get their completion certificate, they have to have their finished projects at that achievement day. I would say we had a pretty good showing from all the projects,” said Manning.

The Avon 4-H Club has about 60 members, and most attended the special day.

“I would say a good percentage of them completed their year,” noted Manning.

In order for the 4-H members to show their livestock or lifeskills (which would include such things as woodworking, photography, scrapbooking, sewing and cake decorating) at the Hants County Exhibition, they were required to present their project at the achievement day.

“This is kind of a stepping stone for some of those that are going to go on to exhibition,” said Manning.

Other members are preparing to go on to bigger shows, like the provincial 4-H show in Truro this fall.

“(For) the livestock members, this is kind of the first chance they've had to show their animals. It's just feeling out how they're going to behave come exhibition time; just to see what they have to work on between now and exhibition time,” noted Manning.

This year marked the 90th anniversary of the Avon 4-H Club. The achievement day wrapped with a potluck supper that was shared with alumni and a mini farmers' challenge, which included such staples as a feed sack race and a woodsman back tank race.

“That was something different for us,” said Manning of the challenge. “I think it went over really well with the kids. They had a blast.”

Be sure to visit the Hants County Exhibition on the opening weekend to see displays from the various 4-H clubs in the county.
