Ariana, Sahara and Kamila Nasr make up the band Ask Your Sister. - Submitted
It’s a real family affair for a Wolfville band launching its new CD this week.
Ask Your Sister is a three-sister band from Wolfville, who have been performing since childhood.
Ariana, Sahara and Kamila Nasr spent their youth immersed in music. After living much of their adult lives apart, pursuing wildly varying music careers in many different countries, the sisters have united to form Ask Your Sister, a band that features three-part harmonies sung in sister style.
Their first CD, Invincible, was produced by Ariana's husband, Andy Flinn, and will be released in Nova Scotia July 10-13. Invincible's old-school pop sounds range from ska to folk to jazz. The three sisters performed all the vocals, guitars, keyboards, saxophones, flutes and jawharps on the CD, and were accompanied by Flinn on bass and Alex Porter on drums. The lyrics to the title track were written by yet another sister, Sophia Nasr, who had originally intended it to be a country song.
Many songs on the album are an invocation to get up and dance, such as the track "ZouZou," a song about being the first one on the dance floor. In a similar vein is the song "Hoop Girl," dedicated to all the hula hoopers out there. There is also a song about arguing with your sisters ("Sister Resister"), an ode to a street musician ("Maddy Malone"), and even a song in Chinese. The band spent some time in China earlier this year, where they had some lyrics written by a Beijing artist, Suzixu.
Ask Your Sister will be performing two CD Release shows in the Annapolis Valley and one in Halifax. They will also be performing this year at the Acoustic Maritime Festival on the Kempt Shore.
