The Good Feelin’ Band will mark 34 years of making music May 31 with a dance at the Old Orchard Inn barn.

The band has five talented Kentville-area members who devote their spare time to music because they love performing. For over three decades, the band has travelled across Nova Scotia, sharing their passion for danceable music and entertaining crowds.

Humour has a great deal to do with the survival of this hard-working group. They rib each other throughout every conversation and acknowledge a few members have changed over the years.

“The five guys are like brothers,” says manager Dave Carver, “and that’s unusual.”

That’s because, as Paul Keizer says, “there has to be no ego.”

Adds Carver, “We look out for the other guy. Nothing festers.”

The band performs approximately 35 nights each year, heading as far away as Yarmouth and New Glasgow. They travel together in a truck, which hauls a trailer filled with gear, including an LED light show.

“We’ve been very lucky,” said Ken Ryan, “music is our game of golf.”

“And we love what we do,” says Carver.

The bandmates certainly appreciate their wives, many of whom they met at dances, who support their music habit.

“I can’t tell you how many birthdays we’ve had to give up for music,” says Keizer, whose home is their practice studio.

Lead singer Ryan is backed by Keizer on bass and vocals, Mike Rogers is on drums and vocals, Carver on guitar and Wade Calnek is on guitar and vocals. This band is known for their memorable three-part harmonies and a repertoire of 250 songs.

They joke about their hair turning gray and the cost of equipment going up, but the five of them can’t wait to start rehearsing.

The band performs at parties, dances, weddings, bars and special events. Their music ranges from classic rock to high-energy country rock to beautiful ballads.
