TRURO – Art Terfry’s passion for cars dates back almost 70 years.

As a 12-year-old, the Truro resident vividly remembers standing with his brother and his brother’s friend as a 1938 Packard convertible rolled by his driveway.

“I was just a little feller, and I remember my brother saying to the guy, ‘some day I’m gonna have a convertible.’ And I can remember saying to myself, ‘I’m gonna have a convertible too, some day.’ And he had one and I’ve had dozens and dozens.”

Terfry, 78, has had a collection of vehicles over the years that many car enthusiasts only dream of. Some he had for a short time before selling, while others he’s had in his collection for more than 40 years.

“Well, there’s (four) things in life I’ve always loved a whole lot – of course, my family, my Captain Morgan, women and cars, and they’re all expensive,” laughed Terfry.

Terfry will be one of several antique car collectors showing their prized possessions at the 32nd annual Golden Age Show & Shine May 31 and June 1 at the Colchester Legion Stadium. He will also be vending, selling classic car parts.

Terfry said he has always been drawn to convertibles, and remembers his first one – a 1956 Monarch, a vehicle he wishes he still had.

“The top was real bad on it when I got it,” he recalled. “It would be about six years old. It was the spring of the year and I started driving and I thought I’d freeze to death in it because I’d always heard that (convertibles are cold). But it wasn’t a cold car while it was moving. When you stopped it cooled off quicker.”

Since buying that initial convertible, Terfry has owned many others. His current collection includes four convertibles – 1970 Plymouth Fury III, 1957 Meteor Rideau 500, 1953 Meteor and 1947 Chrysler DeSoto. He also owns a 1958 Dodge Coronet and 1978 Chrysler New Yorker.

“If I see something and I like it I try my best to buy it, or if I see something and I like it and I can’t buy it then I will try and find one I can buy. Then, maybe I’ll keep it for a few years and I’ll sell it,” Terfry said of his automotive hobby.

Not only does Terfry collect classic cars, but he also restores them. He recalls buying the ’57 Meteor about 15 years ago “in pieces, completely apart.” He worked away at it in his own shop and about five years later restored it to the beauty it is today. Terfry is currently in the process of putting a modern drivetrain in his DeSoto.

“Always been a car guy, all my life. I’ve always just loved cars,” said Terfry, who has been a member of the Golden Age Auto Club for 33 years.

“My mother always said the first word I ever said was, ‘car.’ And she said, ‘if you don’t slow this car down it’s gonna be your last,”’ he added with a hearty laugh. “I used to drive like hell and scare her. Sometimes we’d get home and she’d say, ‘I’m not getting in a car with you again Art!’”

Terfry said he has always been a fan of Chryslers, but it’s hard to pick a favourite from his collection.

“That’s so hard to say,” he said. “Some, I like the looks of better than other ones, some drive better than other ones, and things like that.”

Terfry plans to take his Plymouth and ’57 Meteor to the upcoming show, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days.
