This weekend, Kentville’s Stage Prophets are presenting the full stage production of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, one of the most beloved and longest-running musicals of all time.

The production is set for the Festival Theatre in Wolfville from May 15–18 at 7 p.m. A Saturday matinee is set scheduled for 1:30 p.m.

Among the over 80 people in the cast are Jacob Sampson as Jean Valjean, Steve Roe as Javert and Julie Monette as Fantine. Michelle and Doug MacKey play the innkeepers, while Young Cosette is played by Nicole Grass and William Deveau is Gavroche. Greg Palmer, Ray Baltzer and Nikki Lannan have also returned to the company.  It is gearing up to be an impressive event with gifted actors, a beautiful display of period costumes, creative set designs and hundreds of hours of dedication from the cast and volunteers.

The community theatre group started as a youth program at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kentville. Mary Hanneman of Wolfville is a youth leader at the church and directs the productions. The first one, Godspell, had a cast of 15 teens. Both Godspell and the following Joseph and Technicolor Dream Coat were presented at the church in the basement. Due to the positive response and quality of performance, Hanneman decided to move Stage Prophet productions to Festival Theatre in Wolfville in 2005.

Annual productions have included Jesus Christ Superstar, Children of Eden, Beauty and the Beast and The Wizard of Oz.

Stage Prophets brings a wide community of adults, children, youth and musicians together each year. Rehearsals begin in January and take place every Sunday until May.

Tickets are $20 and are available at Box of Delights, and the Acadia Box Office (542-5500), the Designer Café, M&M Meats, Alliance Dental or St. Joseph’s Church in Kentville.
