Maria Osende Flamenco Company will perform at the Osprey on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 8 p.m.
Flamenco returns to the Osprey when the dancer Maria Osende performs with a male dancer, a singer and a guitarist straight from Spain on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 8 p.m.
“From Spain With Love” or De Espana con Amor is a dance, music and theatre performance full of passion, humour and drama.
Entirely created, produced and conceived in Halifax under the artistic direction of award-winning writer and theatre director Anthony Black, the show features a jaw-dropping performance by a stellar cast.
Spanish guest artist Miguel Tellez, the so called “Fred Astaire” of flamenco, will dominate the stage with grace and an astonishing sense of rhythm, while the spellbinding Maria Osende will mesmerize with the beauty of her movements and artistry. The compelling sounds of the flamenco soul will be provided by virtuoso guitarist Jose Vega and the compelling voice of singer Caridad Vega.
On a screen behind the dancers a movie by Nick Bottomley about the making of De Espana Con Amor will play. The choreography is based on the dramatic notion of a romantic triangle of two women competing for one man. These parts will be played by Osende and the singer Caridad Vega.
Originally from Spain, Maria Osende was trained in ballet and danced with the National Ballet of Spain. After a successful career in ballet, Maria began to work in flamenco. She is the founder, artistic director and principal dancer with Maria Osende Flamenco Company.
Miguel Tellez began his training in his native town of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, considered to be the birthplace of flamenco. At age nineteen Miguel moved to Madrid where he worked with various companies. Later, he worked as a freelance guest artist, including with Maria Osende’s company in 2010.
Singer Caridad Vega makes her debut in Canada with this production. Jose Vega is a popular flamenco guitarist from Spain who now resides in Toronto. Osende has brought these exciting artists together for this unique production.
