The 5th annual Harvest Fair and 27th Annual Giant Pumpkin Festival is ready to go at Islands Park in Shelburne.
This festival has come a long way from its beginning and is growing every year.
Organizers say they are always adding ideas to the event.
“It’s something that could just burst and become so much more,” said one of the organizer Penny Smith.
The Harvest Fair was created by a small group of friends five years ago and their ideas keep adding to the festivities this year.
While it started as a half-day event, it has expanded to include activities from Friday evening on Oct. 11 until Saturday night.
The weekend long event will be held at Islands Provincial Park and people are encouraged to stay the weekend camping.
Friday night will start off with a bonfire as well as stargazing.
Saturday’s festivities will begin at 10 a.m. with pumpkin carving, face painting and a barbeque.
People from all over the community has been lovingly growing their pumpkins for the giant pumpkin weigh off that will be held from 11:00 to 12:30 p.m.
By 12:30 p.m. the paths winding throughout the park will be lined with an array of fun fall activities for families.
Included in these will be some favourites including the scarecrow decorating contest, doughnut eating contest, break the piñata, and the zucchini 500 races.
Another family favourite is the cakewalk but this year there will be a cupcake walk added for children only.
“Each year we keep adding new things,” said Smith.
Some of the new events this year are a pumpkin pie tasting contest and a t-shirt decorating contest.
Enjoy a hotdog roast over a campfire and warm up with a homemade cup of apple cider pressed right before your eyes.
There will be a washer’s tournament, obstacle course and memory scavenger hunt to keep all ages busy and having fun.
The event continues into the evening with a movie night at the lodge as well as a bonfire and stargazing event.
