A local business is teaming up with the Hants County Christmas Angels Society to ensure families struggling to make ends meet can still celebrate the holidays.
The society is the new charity of choice to benefit from the annual Party With A Purpose at Cocoa Pesto (now known as the Eat Barbecue Diner).
Karen Embanks, president of the Hants County Christmas Angels Society, says the restaurant’s owner, Scott Geddes, approached the society with the idea.
“Our funding is not necessarily guaranteed every year so we need to fundraise to help support the families and kids in Hants County,” Embanks explained in a phone interview.
For the past six years, the Party With A Purpose acted as a major fundraiser for the Hants Community Hospital Auxiliary.
Embanks hopes the party, complete with food, drinks, two silent auctions and a live auction, will bring in at least $10,000 for the Christmas Angels this year.
“The society has been celebrating 37 years in the area and we want to make sure that all of the families and kids participate in their own family traditions every year.”
While the cause may have changed, Embanks says the charity event largely remains the same.
“It will be a very similar event to the one that was supporting the hospital auxiliary in the past.”
Laurie Parker has signed on as the auctioneer for the evening. The big ticket auction items include a metal sculpture by Al Simm, tickets to two separate Mermaid Theatre shows, $500 in advertising with AVR/CFAB, a weekend cottage getaway on the Bay of Fundy, a painting by Liz Robinson and $500 in electrical work by Sage Energy.
Embanks says, on average, Christmas Angels helps 200 families each year. The society’s annual telethon is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 1, from noon to 8 p.m. at the Hants County War Memorial Community Centre in Windsor.
The Party With A Purpose is scheduled for Oct. 24 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets, which include the cost of food and drinks, are available at the Scotiabank in Windsor and at the door the night of the event for $65.
