Marine wildlife and underwater environment photojournalist Brian Skerry will give a lecture Feb. 28 at Acadia.
The public talk is based on the National Geographic photographer’s new monograph Ocean Soul: A Story of Love, Discovery, and Hope. Ocean Soul is a collection of Skerry’s favourite images from his many years with National Geographic and as a scuba diver.
He said he would start off talking about the inspiration for the photo and then take the audience on the journey to get pictures of everything from sharks to squids.
Skerry will also be telling stories about what it’s like working in the field and talking about some environmental issues as well, like endangered species and over fishing.
“I’m showing the beautiful pictures but also along with [them] the problems.”
He was a scuba diver before working as a photojournalist, he said.
“I was very much motivated by exploration of the sea.”
Skerry said he has always seen himself as a visual person, so this way he’s able to explore the ocean and then share the stories with his photographs.
“It’s the perfect combination for me.”
The best part about doing lectures is coming back and speaking to a live audience and hearing from people who enjoy your work, he said. It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re out in the field and things aren’t going right, he added.
Skerry is not a stranger to Nova Scotia. He has been here doing stories on leatherback turtles and a beluga whale he wrote a children’s book about.
“I’m very much looking forward to coming back.”
