Municipality to own, society to manage Bear River light

Ownership of the Bear River Lighthouse will end up in the hands of the Municipality of Digby.

Council voted in favor of acquiring the property at its Dec. 14 committee of the whole meeting. Meetings between the municipality and Bear River Lighthouse Society have taken place since the society formed in 2002, discussing the option of ownership with the society managing the building.

Deputy warden Jimmy MacAlpine said the building is in good shape and adjacent to the old railway bed that is now used as a recreational trail. “I would have no problem with ownership if it’s managed by the society and I think we need to preserve our lighthouses,” said Coun. Linda Gregory.

Three members of the Bear River Lighthouse Society were present at the meeting and secretary Dorothy Gray said the lighthouse can be opened up and a new light installed if the deal goes through.

Once the municipality owns the property, the society will look at fundraising options, Gray said.

Ownership of the lighthouse could be handed over from Transportation Canada by spring 2010.
