A 38-year-old Shag Harbour resident has been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after an RCMP raid on a home in that community netted two pounds of marihuana.

In their biggest bust to date, the Shelburne County Street Crime Enforcement Unit (SCEU) made the seizure during a search of the Shag Harbour home on Monday, June 1.

The marihuana was packaged individually in approximately 28-gram packages indicating “it was for sale purposes,” said Cpl. Nancy Mason, commanding officer of the SCEU.

Approximately 16 grams of hashish and a smaller amount of marihuana was also seized during the raid, as were three guns. Barrington RCMP assisted in executing the search warrant. Cpl. Mason estimated the street value of the drugs to be $15,000.

The accused has been charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with possession for the purpose of trafficking. Additional charges related to unsafe storage and unregistered firearms are also anticipated. The accused is scheduled to appear in Barrington provincial court on Aug. 27.

This is the fourth seizure under the Controlled Drug and Substances Act by the SCEU since the plain-clothes unit began operating in the county two months ago.

Cpl. Mason, who transferred to Shelburne from Ontario, arrived last week and rounds out the four-member team, bringing with her 22 years experience as a police officer.

Cpl. Mason said the unit is hoping to get help from the public in identifying low to mid level street crimes or organized criminal activities in the county, which can involve as few as two people. “We really need their help,” said Cpl. Mason. “We can’t be everywhere all the time.”

The SCEU operates primarily out the Shelburne RCMP detachment but covers the entire county.
