The accident occurred between Exit 17 and Exit 17A shortly before 3 p.m. when the call came in at the Queens RCMP detachment, said Corp. Rick Ellens on April 7.

He said details of the accident haven’t been released previously because of a South Shore Traffic Services crime scene reconstruction investigation.

Two Shelburne Co. occupants of one vehicle traveling west were sent to South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater and released later that day with minor injuries. An occupant with multiple injuries of another vehicle heading east was transported to Bridgewater and then to Halifax for surgery. He or she is still in the hospital. The injuries to the Queens Co. resident are serious but not considered life-threatening, according to Corp. Ellens.

Another person in a west bound traveling third vehicle is also okay.

Corp. Ellens said further information would be released in the near future. “No charges have been laid as of yet and the investigation is ongoing.”

Because of the mess and investigation involved, he said, the highway was closed and traffic re-routed until about 7 p.m.

Mill Village and Liverpool firefighters in addition to EHS and Department of Transportation personnel also attended the scene.
