It was a new low …a good one for Barrington RCMP as the number of Halloween-related calls were drastically down from previous years.
The potential for major trouble was there, but police say the absence of calls allowed them to be proactive throughout the night. RCMP members were able to conduct more traffic stops and check more people on the street.
Those efforts led to the discovery of a 16-year-old male youth who was found in possession of two bottles filled with what is believed to be gasoline in a backpack which also contained rags and a lighter. The incident took place in the Town of Clarks Harbour. The contents of the bag were seized and the youth was released into parental custody. The investigation into the matter is continuing.
In addition, an intoxicated 20-year-old Clarks Harbour man was jailed after he was caught spray-painting graffiti on the Royal Canadian Legion in Clarks Harbour and a 20 year old Shelburne woman was arrested for allegedly breaching her probation near a bar in Barrington.
Police were kept busy in Clarks Harbour for the majority of the night as small groups of mostly peaceful revelers moved throughout the town.
Fireworks, alcohol, and a small quantity of drugs were also seized by police in various places of the detachment’s jurisdiction during the night.
While RCMP members were busy, up until midnight of the 31st, the police had been called by the public on only one Halloween related incident - a small fire on the road in Shag Harbour.
It was generally quiet in other areas of the county as well, although there was a little excitement generated early in the evening in Shelburne when smoke filled the Irving Convenience Store on Water Street. The smoke was caused by a faulty piece of equipment but local firefighters were on the scene for about an hour making sure there was no fire.
RCMP reported a call of one smashed pumpkin on Water Street for Halloween. Other than that all was quiet.
