Digby’s volunteer fire department got a Labour Day boost from the Wharf Rat Rally this year and now is looking at ways to take advantage next year of the presence of thousands of visitors.

Deputy chief Ben Cleveland says the department aimed to make $11,000 to $12,000 at its annual Labour Day Fair this year. “We are going to net about $13,500,” Cleveland said today. “It was quite a success.”

The department worked hard to control expenses, but it also got a boost from increased attendance, including a number of visitors to the motorcycle rally who discovered Monday’s fair and bingo. There was also a casino night on Friday. “We have plans now to take advantage next year of the Wharf Rat Rally,” he said.

This was the 55th version of the annual fair, and it has been held in the current fire hall since its construction 35 years ago.
