The Keith’s might even had done better but penalties allowed the Dogs to claw even at 6-6, before the home team scored two unanswered goals in the third period and held off the Ice Dogs when they pulled goalie Josh Merrick in the dying seconds.
Leading the Keith’s was a hat trick by Tyler Robertson, who also added an assist.
Devon Bezanson, Nick Bent, Caleb d’Entremont, Mike Mountan and Trevor MacCulloch, scored singles for the Keith’s.
After their loss Saturday when they played with a short bench in Barrington, the Keith’s shocked the Ice Dogs in the first period of this afternoon’s game, scoring first the first two goals before the visitors could reply. The Keith’s led 5-3 at the end of the frame, and added a sixth in the second period.
An interference penalty and a double high sticking infraction, the latter against Eric Banks, give the Ice Dogs a two-man advantage, and they scored two of three goals while the Keith’s were shorthanded.
The Dogs kept the Keith’s bottled up in their own end for half of the first period before MacCullough’s goal, and then Robertson’s goal with just 49 seconds left ended any hope of a Barrington recovery.
The Ice Dogs did get a two-goal effort from left winger Jeff Goulden. However, the visitors were without one of its strong lines. Two of the three players who scored hat trick Saturday did not make the trip.
Joseph Symonds had started in goal for the Dogs, but was hauled at 13:37 of the second period after letting in the Keith’s sixth goal. He faced 15 shots in net. Merrick also faced 15 shots and allowed two goals.
Winning goalie Steve Morse kicked out 23 of 29 shots.
On Saturday, Nick Brent and Brock Cormier scored the two Keith’s goals in a game that saw the Digby-based team outshot 63-17. Chris Whitmore took the loss in goal.
It was a good weekend for the Ice Dogs, winning two of three matches. On Friday, they handed Clare Lions their first loss of the season, a 5-4 overtime win in the Université Sainte-Anne arena.
