Local firefighters were kept busy during the past week with a pair of major structure fires.

Just after midnight on Nov. 21, Berwick firefighters responded to a fire in a machine shop on Brooklyn Street in Weston. Mutual aid was dispatched from as far away as Middleton, Hall’s Harbour, Canning and Wolfville, and Greenwich was also called to stand by at the Berwick fire hall. As well, the Kings County Hazardous Materials Team was dispatched to the scene of the fire at the request of the Department of the Environment to monitor the scene for any potential hazmat issues.

Early Nov. 23, New Minas firefighters responded to a structure fire at the Double Dragon Restaurant on Commercial Street. Mutual aid was dispatched to the scene from Kentville, Greenwich, Port Williams, Wolfville and Waterville. The building containing the restaurant was extensively damaged, and the fire, according to New Minas Chief James Redmond, has been ruled accidental, having started in the laundry room area. At press time, fire department officials were still awaiting lab analysis to try and determine the cause of the fire.

New Minas firefighters had a fairly busy week even without the two major structure fires and hazmat call. November 20, New Minas responded to an alarm sounding at New Minas Elementary School, then to a medical emergency at the fire hall for an individual experiencing chest pains.

November 23, firefighters responded to another alarm at New Minas Elementary, and to a small woods fire behind Cornwallis Motors on Commercial Street (determined to have been deliberately set).

November 26, New Minas responded to an alarm sounding at Sears in New Minas, and to a pair of motor vehicle collisions on Commercial Street, resulting in minor injuries.

In addition to the three mutual aid calls, Kentville firefighters responded to a medical emergency on Academy Street Nov. 22, and to a car in the ditch in Coldbrook Nov. 24.

Canning firefighters responded to a medical emergency Nov. 24 on the Black Hole Road in Sheffield Mills. Wolfville firefighters responded to a building alarm sounding in Gaspereau Nov. 25.
