A swanky evening of entertainment, cabaret seating, semi-formal dress and yummy mocktails is homework for Avon View’s Business Management 12 class.

Students in Sheldon States’ course decided they wanted to go beyond textbook lessons on organization by planning a talent showcase, An Evening at the View, to take place Wednesday, May 28.

Talent from Avon View and the community will take the stage, singing, dancing and performing monologues. Contributions from a Grade 11 drama class and a Grade 12 film class will make it a multimedia evening.

When the class learned a fellow student, whose mother has breast cancer, was fundraising for breast cancer organizations, they were inspired to help. All proceeds from An Evening at the View will go to Windsor’s Breast Quest Dragonboat team. The group hopes that members of the breast cancer survivors’ paddling team will attend as guests of honour.

Realistic learning

Ian Armour thinks he and his classmates are learning more planning a real event than they would reading a chapter on the topic. “This is a better way of learning.”

Although few of the students have organized an event this big before, they are rising to the challenge. Kate MacKay and Lesley Anderson say they have learned it takes preparation, organization, cooperation and patience to pull off a team project of this size.

Jessica Stephens said States has been supportive, but the class has done most of the work. “He likes to step back and let us plan it.” The senior students are rising to the challenge. “It’s good for us to learn ourselves,” Anderson added.

With a few last minute details to firm up, the group is working hard to ensure an entertaining evening. “I think we’ll all be on our toes (that night)” MacKay said. “You’re always running around until the last minute.”

Tickets for the 7 p.m. show are available at the Avon View main office, Moe’s Music, the Orchid Day Spa and the Wharf convenience store. They are $6 in advance, $8 at the door.
