Dear Editor:

I read your ‘Fox on the Fairway’ story in a recent issue of the Annapolis County Spectator and I have to tell you that way back in the late 1960s, ‘Slinky’ had a predecessor in the form of a delightful Golden Labrador Retriever named Sandy. Sandy belonged to the late Dave and Jean Thomson and children Davie and Barbara, the then-residents of the home in Allain’s Creek, which is now owned by Dennis Buchanan.

Sandy used to hang out in the ‘rough’ alongside the golf course at the edge of the Dugway Road and wait for a golf ball to land. He’d then dart out, snatch it and away he’d go – home – where he’d deposit it by the back door!

When young Davie came home from school he’d gather up whatever Sandy had brought home, wash them well and on Saturday, he’d take them to the Club House and sell them for ‘pocket money.’ That was quite an enterprise!

One of the funny things that Sandy did was to whine and whimper beside the kitchen table one day when Jean and I were peeling hard-boiled eggs prior to making egg salad. Sandy thought the eggs were golf balls and he wanted to take them to Davie. We let him have one and that is exactly what he did with it.

Yours truly,

Barb Morency
