Shelburne Rebels coast to Regional hoop title

Bridgetown came out flat against a fast Shelburne offense that was led by the inside shooting of Alistair Scott and the outside touch of Chance Acker.

Shelburne led 43-25 at the half, with Acker pouring in 20 points including a trio of three-pointers.

Bridgetown’s zone defense and its man-to-man defence were beaten by Shelburne’s shooting and the Rebel’s slashing attack.

The aggressive Shelburne defense kept the Trojans reeling until the fourth quarter when Bridgetown regained its composure to outscore the Rebels 21-8.

Missed scoring opportunities and uncharacteristically weak rebounding were costly for the Trojans in the first three quarters of play.

Rebels coach Steven Pippy said his team came out ready to play and built up its momentum by putting points on the board early. “I was concerned about how the team would play after the emotional game against Digby the night before,” said Pippy. “It was a good win considering the home loss to Digby in league play. These kids can turn things around.”

Pippy felt that back-to-back wins for the Rebels gives the team an excellent chance to be seeded first for Provincials which will be hosted March 5-7 by St. Mary’s Bay Academy.

Bridgetown coach Mark Wolverton said his team struggled offensively, running off picks and getting open. “We didn’t rebound well and they did,” said Wolverton, “but we achieved our goal of making it to Provincials in two weeks.”

Shelburne’s Chance Acker led all scorers with 30 points including six three-pointers. Alistair Scott added 14 and Brendan Pippy chipped in 10 for the win.

Greg McOrmand scored 17 while Jeff McNeill had 13 and Corey Morrison 10 for the Trojans.
