Eco-Friendly Kitchen

(NC)—Freshen up your home naturally with products that won't harm your family or the environment. Simple, natural products like baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, soap and water will cover most of your cleaning needs. These tips will help you reduce, reuse and recycle in the kitchen:

1. Place leftover food in reusable glass containers that are micro wave and oven safe.

2. Keep lids on pots to prevent heat from escaping. Place small pots on small burners and large pots on large burners for maximum efficiency.

3. Chill drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap.

4. Fill sinks with water to wash and rinse dishes rather than using running water.

5. Close the refrigerator door after every use to save energy.

6. Replace incandescent bulbs with more efficient, longer lasting, compact fluorescent bulbs.

7. Affix a low-flow faucet aerator to reduce water consumption.

8. Use washable rags instead of paper towel.

9. Recycle and compost to reduce the amount of garbage bags.

10. Instead of chemical cleaners, use vinegar and water to clean glass or lemon juice to remove stains.

11. For an all-purpose cleaning spray, combine baking soda with white vinegar, a few drops of antibacterial tea tree oil, and water. Shake it up in a spray bottle and use when needed.

12. Sprinkle baking soda in the garbage before you insert the liner, or place it in the fridge to control odours. It works wonders.
