Vendors and booth holders are wanted for The Incredible Picnic, a celebration of local food and community spirit, in Starrs Point on the grounds of Prescott House.

Local organizer Linda Best of Greenwich says the event one of eight picnics to be held across Nova Scotia Aug. 24, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.. “The goal of the event is to provide consumers with a showcase of the best Nova Scotian producers have to offer,” she says: “the fruits, vegetables, seafood, meats, cheeses, breads, beverages - and what chefs can do with these amazing ingredients in an outdoor celebration.”

The Incredible Picnic aims to connect traditional good feeling about picnics to the benefits of selecting Nova Scotia products, Best says, because there are benefits for farm families, the provincial economy and the environment. “Plus, buying local and eating fresh tastes great!”

Organizers are looking for producers and chefs to sell local foods so event goers can create their own picnic lunch. “The sky is the limit: think bread, cheeses, salads, sandwiches, BBQ, grilled veggies, corn on the cob, watermelon slices or an heirloom tomato salad bar....”

Communicating the importance of local foods to consumers is the only goal, she says.

Each event is being organized by a local steering groups, with support from Select Nova Scotia, whic is sponsoring free booth spaces; a limited number are available at each event, “so make sure to reserve early,” says Best. “All you need to do is complete the vendor application form and send in by email or fax.”

Registration deadline is July 31. Contact 542-3442 or lbest@ ns.sympatico.ca.
