The PEI Garden Show

This is the fourth year for the show, which attracts gardeners from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in addition to the hosting province.

Garden show coordinator Paula Sark says close to 2,000 have attended the event in the past. “The shows are growing each year. It’s the right time of year to get people out thinking about their gardens,” she said. The Garden Show is a fundraising event presented by the South Shore Community Organization and takes place at the South Shore Actiplex in Crapaud. At press time close to three-dozen exhibitors had signed up for booths. Demonstrations and many speakers on a wide variety of topics have been booked for the event.

These include Angus Mellish from Veseys describing how to grow the freshest and best summer produce, Island physiotherapists sharing the secret on how to enjoy our "labours" to the fullest - pain-free, organic gardening talks, nature gardening, and photography tips from a professional instructor.

Canada’s best-known chef, Michael Smith, is the host of Chef at Home, Chef at Large and The Inn Chef on Food Network Canada and in 26 other countries. Smith is an award winning cookbook author, newspaper columnist, roving Canadian cuisine ambassador, restaurant chef and home cook. His third cookbook, Chef at Home is a smash hit across Canada. Smith will be on the floor Saturday at 3 p.m. with instructions on how to create tasty, healthy meals for friends and family.

Other attractions include a garden cafe, door prizes and youth activities.

Show times are Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $6, or $10 for two days. Under 12 years is free.

Sark says the volunteer board of directors has been pleased to date with the financial success of the shows. “The funds raised are returned to our community facility the South Shore Actiplex, offering programs to our local residents working towards our mandate of building healthier communities,” she said.
