Neither of Yarmouth County’s two MLAs are ruling out a run for the leadership of the provincial Progressive Conservative party, but both Richard Hurlburt and Chris d’Entremont say they will be taking their time to think it over.
“I’m definitely keeping all of my options open,” Yarmouth MLA Richard Hurlburt said last Friday, two days after Rodney MacDonald stepped down as leader of the Tories.
“There’s a lot of things to consider,” Hurlburt said, but he admitted the prospect is appealing. “I have a strong desire to represent the people of my community and my province. I feel I have a personal touch with the public.”
Asked about his leadership aspirations, Argyle MLA Chris d’Entremont said it’s not something he’s going to rule out at this point.
“We’ve got a lot of time to think about it. We’ve got an interim leader who will probably be in for a year to a year-and-a-half, so there’s plenty of time to reflect, think about it and see if there is any support for it,” he said.
Former premier Rodney MacDonald announced on June 24 that he was stepping down as party leader. Karen Casey, who served as ministers of education and health in the MacDonald government, was chosen to serve as interim Tory leader.
