It has been a whirlwind week for a group of Shelburne Regional High School students who recently shared a Yarmouth stage with the likes of Charlie A’Court Bruce Guthro, Joel Plaskett and Classified.
The students, all members of the local rock band The Hold Up, were the winners of a battle of the bands contest that saw them awarded the chance to perform a song at Nova Scotia Music Week’s Gala Concert on Sunday, Nov. 8 in Yarmouth.
The band members, Jade Bennett, Emily Keeler, Brendan Pippy, Ryan Perry and Garrett VanBuskirk were picked up by a limousine on Friday at the school and taken to the Rodd Grand Hotel for three days of workshops and concert in association with the event.
For the gala concert, the group played a cover of the Paramore song Decode for its largest audience yet, numbering in the hundreds at the Yarmouth Mariner Centre.
While the excitement of Nova Scotia Music Week was still wearing off, members of the band were preparing to leave for an all-expenses paid trip to Prince Edward Island on Wednesday representing Nova Scotia in the finals of the National Youth Talent Contest where they will compete against young talents from every province and territory.
The band won the right to take part in the event after winning the provincial leg of the competition in Yarmouth in August.
The national contest has a $3,000 grand prize.
Those finals will be held on Friday, Nov. 20 at the Confederation Centre in Charlottetown.
