Digby native Nathan Robertson took no prisoners when he travelled to Montreal last weekend to participate in the Power Wars power lifting competition.
In the squat, the Amherst resident Robertson accomplished his goal of a ground-crushing 750 pounds.
“My first attempt at the squat I did 675,” said Robertson. “On my second attempt I failed at 750 pounds but on my third attempt I did the 750 pounds. It was a personal record.”
The next two events didn’t go as planned.
In the bench press, Robertson benched 540 pounds on his second attempt.
In his third attempt at 567.5 pounds, the special shirt power lifters wear blew out on Robertson and, as a result, he failed at the attempt.
In the dead lift, the third event of the Power Wars, Robertson lifted 512.5 pounds.
“I tried 553 in my second lift but damaged my bicep,” said Robertson, “but even with all the bad stuff happening, I managed to finish in the top three overall.”
With the three lifts, Robertson tallied a total of 1,802.5 pounds.
That weight gives him a master class total, which is anything between 1,790 and 1,940.
“Any weight at 1,940 or above is the elite class,” said Robertson
Before heading to Montreal, Robertson made it known he’d have to be at the top of his game if he hoped to make the elite class, but it wasn’t to be.
The three lifts gave him second place in the 242-pound open class.
After the competition Robertson went to the hospital to get his bicep checked.
His next competition will be the Highland Games in Pugwash, depending on how well his bicep heals.
