The community of Woods Harbour is celebrating this week with a full line-up of activities for Woods Harbour Days.
“It’s getting bigger by the year,” said Becky Brannen, one of the organizers.
Contests, games, a queen pageant, music, entertainment, fireworks and parades on land and on sea round out the five day festival, with almost all events being held at the former Woods Harbour Fire Hall.
Woods Harbour Days opens on Wednesday, June 10 with teams of two competing in a scavenger hunt that begins at 6:30 p.m.
Twelve young ladies between the ages of 11 and 16 will be taking to the stage for the queen pageant on Thursday, which gets underway at 7:15 p.m.
A limited number pf tickets are available for the turkey supper and entertainment, on tap for Friday night beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The fun starts early on Saturday, with breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m., followed by the street parade at 10 a.m. The parade starts at the Post Office Road and travels to the fire hall where games, food, bingo, and numerous other activities are planned for the remainder of the day and into the evening.
A fool’s auction, where you could go home with almost anything, gets underway at 1 p.m., followed by the popular frog-hopping contest at 2 p.m.
The action will be on the Greenwood Cemetery Road staring at 4 p.m. with go-cart races for both youth (ages 5 to 18) and adult (19 and over).
It’s back to the fire hall Saturday evening for a youth poker tournament starting at 7 p.m., followed by a campfire (bring a chair) and entertainment at 8:30 p.m. and fireworks at dusk. Anyone interested in participating in the campfire entertainment line-up is asked to contact Becky Brannen at 723-2748.
Breakfast will be served again on Sunday from 7 to 9 a.m. followed by wharf box races and fear factor at the Falls Point wharf starting at 11 a.m.
Local fishermen lost at sea will be remembered during a memorial service at the fishermen’s monument at 2 p.m. A gospel concert will follow at the fire hall. Anyone wanting to participate in the concert can contact David Nickerson at 723-2687.
Wrapping up the festival will be the parade of lights, with the boats leaving the Falls Point wharf at 10 p.m.
