The Coldbrook Lions were “giving away a whole lot of money” in a one night Nov. 24, the end of a year-long Club 400 raffle in support of Central Kings’ safe grad committee.
Lions attended a school variety show to take advantage of a captive audience for the last big money draws, and also to praise the school and students for the safe grad program.
“We knew we needed help selling the tickets,” said King Lion Ross Norman. “We do a lot of things, but we’re not grate ticket sellers.”
The Lions kept 200 and the school took on the challenge of selling 200, making a $20,000 pot: $10,000 for prizes in the weekly raffles to follow, and $10,000 to split between the Lions’ community programs and safe grad.
Norman had high praise for C.K. staff liaison Cora Lee Smith.
“You’re not going to get anyone else in the province that does safe grad like she does,” he said with some emotion. “She’s a super teacher, mom and an individual.”
The Lions thanked her especially with a Christmas themed centrepiece, and then turned over a $5,000 cheque to the safe grad committee.
The winning final tickets included $500 for Angela Brown, $1,000 for Geoff and Renee Churchill and $2,500 for Sheila Jacquard.
Available tickets for the next Club 400 were down to a just handful that night, and the Lions and the school are both happy to be continuing the partnership.
