Service held in memory of fallen firefighters

Ten fire departments along with RCMP members and E.H.S. paramedics paid their respects to Canadian fallen firefighters on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the monument in front of the Yarmouth fire hall. Firefighters from Island & Barrington Passage, East Pubnico, Westport, Islands & District, Amirault's Hill/Hubbard's Point, Quinan, Wedgeport & District, Wood's Harbour, Meteghan and Yarmouth gathered to listen to Father Clarence Thibeau's message and the laying of two wreaths by platoon chief Rick Quesnel and volunteer firefighter Roger King.

1920 Bickle Horse Drawn Pumper

From Lockeport, Shelburne County (replacing Lockeport's Ronald Steamer). Its pump is driven by an internal combustion engine, but horses were used to get the apparatus to the fire. This apparatus can be viewed on the first floor of the Firefighters' Museum.

Date in History

Sept. 20, 1974 - A 3:57 a.m. fire at Ernie's Grill located on the corner of Main and Heuston Streets kept the Yarmouth Fire Department at the scene for just over an hour. Damage was to the rear of the wooden building.

Firefighters' Bowling League

Start up night for the bowling league is this Tuesday. Eight teams have indicated they are ready to go.

Certificates Awarded

At the regular monthly meeting, Sept. 6, father and son, Rick and Chris Quesnel were presented with their incident management certificates, having successfully completed the course. Firefighter Peter Winship has completed the fire instructor #1 course and received his certification.

Upcoming pump course

Oct. 5 and 6 have been set aside for new learners in the YFD for pump operation. Contact is Peter Poirier.

Auxiliary looking for new members

The YFD Auxiliary would like to increase their numbers. The group meets on the second Sunday of the month at the Yarmouth fire hall. Contact Wendy Deveau at 742-1350 for more information.

YFD annual banquet - Oct. 13; St. George Christmas Party Dec. 10; wild game supper Dec. 14; YFD children's Christmas party Dec., 16.
