June was a very busy month here at Brand View Manor in Berwick.

Susan Ueffing was out to entertain. We had a “spring fest,” with games, displays and a rhubarb recipe contest. Maureen Aalders from Occupational Therapy won, tying with Activity’s Rhubarb Torte. The Beauty Shop girls were second with their Jiffy Rhubarb Crumble.

A school youth band from Hantsport was here one morning. We had a mini golf afternoon.

A number of fathers got to go to Halls Harbour for lobster Father’s Day.

We had a spring dance with music by the Bauchmans.

We had a wedding fashion show with activity girls modeling wedding dresses.

Bowling ended for the summer and certificates were presented to all residents who participated: first place ladies, Carolyn Lindsay; second place ladies, Emily Waroway; third place ladies, Mary Woodbury. First place men, Harry Gilchrist; second place, Gerald Aucoin; third, Lawrence Gates. Best attendance: Nellie Varner.

We had a talent show, with residents and staff doing everything: playing the piano, singing, skits and songs by our GVM Choir, accompanied and directed by summer student Anita Ayling.

We celebrated Canada Day June 30 with units decorated, Canada Trivia, stories and movies. The best-decorated unit was Laundry, Franey Unit was second, Kitchen, third; and Ross Unit, fourth.

June 29, following our Sunday service, a reception in honor of Liz Johnson’s retirement was held. Liz has been chaplain at GVM for nine years. Staff, apartment tenants and residents expressed their appreciation. Mary Perkins will be taking over for the summer months.

The GVM Seniors Foundation Golf Tournament was a success, with over $18,000 raised. Thank you to all those who put many hours of planning and organization into this event.

Our memorial gardens are getting a new sitting area for residents to enjoy. It will be greatly appreciated once it is completed.

We are planning our family afternoon for August 12. We have music planned, with ice cream in the garden. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m. If it rains, it will be held inside. All family members are welcome to come and share time with their family member.

Anyone having some free time who would like to volunteer, taking residents for walks or just sitting in the garden, please call Lynn Hardy at Grand View Manor.
