The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is hosting a Family History Booth Friday to Sunday in Privateer Park to help people research their ancestral roots.

Elder Charles Compass and Sister Carol Compass, two church missionaries, are leading the effort that will include young Elders and church volunteers as well. The service is free.

Elder Compass says, "The purpose is to get people excited about doing their family history and help show them how to get started."

Pedigree Charts, which look like a family tree with room for more details, will be handed out "to use like worksheets to help get them started with things they already know about their ancestors," Elder Compass says.

Other resources, like censuses and where family history libraries are located, will be provided. They are also willing to help people begin the family name research process. "Some people just don't know where to start," he says.

Elder Compass adds a computer and literature will be on-site to demonstrate how to use www.familysearch.org, which, through the church has become one of the largest family history web sites in the world and is free to use.
