Proposed recycling changes border on extreme

Letter to the Yarmouth Vanguard

Topics :
Ohio

I am writing in support of the points made in the letter by Susan Surette in your Oct. 24 issue, regarding proposed recycling changes.

I certainly agree that there are some serious environmental concerns worldwide that require immediate attention, but I would suggest that the occasional stray chicken bone inadvertently entering the landfill, is not paramount among them at this point.

We see big corporations spewing tons of poisons into the air and water, clear-cutting forests and dragging the ocean floor, and we are made to feel that we can save the planet by putting garbage into clear bags, so that garbage police can be assured that "nothing funny is going on in that bag".

Would a salary of $60,000 not be better spent cleaning the seagull feathers and litter off of the downtown sidewalks?

While I am in favour of sound and sensible landfill management, I also believe that these proposed changes are bordering on extreme, and that some of this energy and attention should be placed in areas of more serious impact to our environment, such as those mentioned above.

Glenn Thorbahn,

South Ohio
